The best work-days are the days your office closes at 1 for a long, holiday weekend.

I spent the morning doing nothing, as usual, and left at 12:30 to go home and change and charge my phone which was about to die. Then I went back into the city to meet Ellie for lunch; we got hot dogs from Gray's Papaya, which I'd never had before. Not bad. We wandered a bit. I love her neighborhood on the Upper West Side. If I had the money, I'd move there in a heartbeat. Sadly, I don't... Then we got some ice cream at Tasti D-Lite, which I had also never had. Then we split up briefly while she did something work-related, and I browsed some frames at LensCrafters ($250 for Chanel, anyone?) and looked through the racks at Ann Taylor. And I stopped in this store called BOC on Columbus which had some really great dresses... but they all ran in the $200-400 range. So looking only. And touching. But no buying.

Next up, Ellie stopped into a salon for a trim while I went down the block for a manicure and pedicure, and then we met up again to go to her apartment. We killed a little more time before heading on to the AMC in Times Square to meet her friend Kara and see The Devil Wears Prada. It was awesome.

And then on home to eat something. Tomorrow brings laundry, cleaning, and grocery shopping. If I'm actually productive, which is questionable. And Sunday brings Brannon!

The Weather Channel has decided to join forces with the MTA to screw me over.

I've always gone to the Weather Channel for my forecast. Always. I mean, besides the childhood-predisposition to it formed by my dad's morning ritual of watching it during the hour it takes him to get ready, what name inspires confidence like The Weather Channel? Or weather.com? Nothing, that's what. But they consistently, as I mentioned, screw me over.

Take yesterday, for example. I checked their forecast Tuesday night before I went to bed, and it was practically the same Wednesday morning when I got up: High: 76 degrees. Wind: 10-15 mph. Rain: 90% chance. So I wore a slightly heavier-weight shirt with 3/4 sleeves because besides the weather outside, I also have to deal with the air-conditioning inside. And instead of an umbrella, I took my rain jacket, 'cause I thought it might be chilly what with the 70s and the overcast-ness and the wind/rain.

Fast forward to 4:30. I get off the train in Long Island City where I was planning to go look at an apartment, step outside, and it's HOT. And sunny. Partly cloudy, maybe, but SUNNY. By the time I've walked one block in the wrong direction, one block back, and two blocks in the right direction, I'm sweating. And sufficiently unimpressed with the neighborhood to turn around and go home, anyway. I finally get home, and the first thing I do is check the weather. And what did it say? Current temperature: 86 degrees. Feels like: 90 degrees.

Not to mention it didn't rain during either my morning or afternoon commute, and really, that's all that matters. I think I heard one person say it had been raining, maybe around lunchtime or late morning, but it couldn't have lasted very long.

Conclusion: You suck, Weather Channel.

I'm bored out of my mind. I did what I need to do today, and I can't do anymore until my boss reviews it with me. I've killed as much time as possible. Thank God it's almost time to go. Maybe I'll sneak out early.

Highlights of today's conference call: the boss doodling because even he's bored, someone going on hold and subjecting the rest of us to the music, and Norma from Chicago with her odd mix of Spanish/Midwestern accent.

I just finished watching Dogville. Basically, the whole thing made me sick, but the last 10 minutes redeems it just enough.

I've been keeping an eye on apartment listings on craigslist for the last few weeks. I've hated not being able to do more in preparation of moving, but there's really nothing available more than a month in advance. But I saw one that was too perfect to pass up, at least on paper, so I emailed the broker to ask about seeing it. If all works out, I will tomorrow. I'm not holding my breath or anything, but the ad says it's two blocks from Queens Plaza, 2 bedrooms, pet-friendly, and in my price range of $1200. So if it's a nice apartment (as I said, not holding my breath), I might be willing to go ahead and get it rather than miss out on something. We'll see.

Brannon, the future roomie, is coming in on this Sunday to visit for a week, and she's set to move up here on September 5. I can't wait. I get Brannon AND my cat. How awesome is that?

And in other news, I'm still devoted to my plan of going to SCAD for grad school, but now I'm wavering on my choice of programs. Graphic design or art history? I like both in theory. I requested volunteer information from the Met. I figured that might help me decide if art history is really something I want to pursue. But for some reason, they still use postal mail for everything, so I have to wait on that.

I found out at work today that we get off at 1 on Friday AND have Monday and Tuesday off. Score.

Rider lady: Would you like this?
Hobo lady: What the hell is that?
Rider lady: It's a kiwi.
Hobo lady: Bitch! I said I need some food!

Last night, I joined Ellie for Broadway Under The Stars. Unfortunately, I started to get another my now almost-frequent headaches and very nearly left (we got there two hours early), but I managed to stay until it started, and then it went pretty quickly. Some of the people/songs I had never heard of before, but they were still good. Jane Krakowski performed Don't Tell Mama from Cabaret (I didn't even know she could sing, but she did it very well). For some reason, they decided Lee Ann Womack was a good choice to sing Don't Cry For Me, Argentina from Evita. Very weird. But the last performance was Bebe Neuwirth singing Cabaret, and that was worth staying for. And then Liza Minnelli made a surprise appearance to introduce Harold Prince, the subject of the night's tribute, and then there were fireworks. And then a whole bunch of people leaving and going to the subway at the same time.

As for the headaches, I don't know if it's caffeine-related because I've been cutting back or withdrawal-related because I stopped taking the Cymbalta or maybe I just finally need to get my eyes checked again. Especially since I'm literally sitting in front of a computer for 8 hours a day now. I saw that there's a LensCrafters very close to my office, so I might stop there after work one day. I've been wanting to get a new pair of glasses, anyway.

I had a pretty unproductive weekend. My air conditioner arrived was waiting for me when I got home Friday, which I wasn't expecting. Apparently, the UPS guy was just leaving me a notice when my upstairs neighbor was leaving, and she signed for it for me. Yay! It was also a lot heavier than I expected; way too much for me to carry, much less up the stairs. But I'm a crafty one, I am. I rolled it up the stairs, end over end. Kind of like a slinky, only backwards. And a lot heavier. It had just the right distribution of weight. And then I slid it across the floor to my apartment. Of course, it hasn't been installed yet, either, because it's too heavy for me to lift into the window and I obviously don't want to drop it. Either on me or on some poor, unsuspecting passer-by on the street.

Other than that, nothing much of note. I rented some more movies on Sunday and ordered pizza. I watched Match Point last night, which I've been wanting to see for a while, but it was always out at the video store. It wasn't quite what I expected, but I like that in a movie. Since I now know that my parents read this... (Hi!!!) ...I'll just leave a quick note that you guys might enjoy it. Definitely not a Sunday night with Grandma movie, but still worth renting.

I also finished reading Middlesex, a birthday present from Ellie, which was very good. So I started the next book on my Things A Good English Major Should Have Read Already list, Vanity Fair. I think this one's going to be a little slower going, but I will persevere. I'm glad I've seen the movie, though.

Well. That's about it for my weekend. On to my next time-killing endeavor.

I had two pieces of turkey and some mashed potatoes left over from lunch yesterday. I put my initials on them and the date and put them in the fridge at work so I could eat it today. Well, I ended up going to the caf for lunch after all (with a coworker; we spent about an hour there to kill time), but I didn't think it would be a problem. Generally, as long as you have your food labeled, it won't get thrown out. Anyway, I went in the kitchen a few minutes ago to get water and saw some food containers and bags and yogurt cups and such just sitting on the counter. Odd. I looked at the refrigerator. Now, there's always a flyer posted on the fridge that says it's cleaned out every Friday at 2:30 and anything un-labeled gets tossed. But I noticed that the wording on the flyer seemed to have changed. I looked closer. It said, "Please be aware that due to a power outage scheduled for this weekend, ALL food should be removed from the refrigerator by 1:30 pm."

I opened the door. The fridge is totally empty. And for some inexplicable reason, my labeled food is not on the counter with the other stuff. It got tossed.

If that flyer has been posted all week, I never noticed it. You'd think the least they could do, if they were going to make a change like that, would be to print the damn thing on colored paper. But no. So I'm left without my only semi-real meal of the weekend. Probably two. Bastards.

I had a little trouble getting up this morning. I decided it was worth it to sleep in for another hour and a half and just be late to work. And it was.

I submitted my application to SCAD today. Now I have to get three recommendations and start putting together a portfolio. Eek.

But now for my fun story of the day. On my way home, some guy got on the train and sat down across from me. He was one of those people that you just know is obnoxious. He said a couple of things, I think, to no one in particular (because you know we were interested), but I don't know what; I had my iPod in. Anyway, the first thing I noticed about him was his bag. It seriously made me want to stab him with an ice pick. And then what did he do? Pulled out a copy of PC Gamer to read. And laughed at something in it. GAH. And then when people had the audacity to sit down right next to him, he got up and moved (closer to me, of course, so thanks for that). So I called him a dick in my head and that made me feel better.

PSA #2: Don't wear your sweater/cardigan tied around your neck. It doesn't look good. Especially in the middle of summer. I don't care how cool it is inside your office building. If it's necessary to bring it, fine. Wear it or leave it at your desk. But don't tie around your neck like a prep-school throwback.

I sat next to crazy train-lady this morning and didn't even realize it until she got up to leave at 36th St. I guess we're sharing a commute now. I realized that I never shared with you what she was wearing. (Sidenote: I'm becoming such a fashion snob these days) Two days in a row, she's worn the same (or identical) pink scrubs pants. This disturbs me for two different reasons, a) I hope to God she does not work in any medical capacity whatsoever, and b) I despise the wearing of scrubs by anyone who does not, in fact, work in the medical field. So really, she loses either way. She did manage to change shirts, though. But (and this is the special part) she was wearing what looked like one of those personal cooling systems around her neck. If that is, in fact, what it was, it was a very cheap one; it looked like it was made of something like terrycloth and operated by holding ice. And finally, she's sporting closely cropped hair with a bit of a mullet in the back. Classic.

Here's to many more sightings, crazy train-lady.

I left work at about a quarter to five and started walking to the subway. I went down the steps, walked across to the turnstiles, and attempted to go through. Know what I forgot to do?

Swipe my metro card.

So instead of walking through the metal bar, it stopped me dead in my tracks. That's right, I've reached a new low in stupidity. Or memory lapse, whichever. Seriously, I just zoned out. Like I was in that mindset of leaving the subway where you don't swipe to go through. And it doesn't help matters that I couldn't remember the word "turnstile" and had to call Ellie for help.

Yeah, I felt like an idiot.

It's really a cruel, cosmic joke that summers are so hot and miserable outside but once you go inside, you're liable to freeze to death from the air conditioning. And I don't know if I feel comfortable bringing a freakin' sweater with me every day to work. It just seems wrong.

But the greatest thing happened this morning. I got on the subway and since there were no seats, I stood next to the door, leaning back against the partition. I don't know if I would have noticed her otherwise, but standing in front of me to the left was crazy lady from the train! She was apparently not high this morning because she acted perfectly normal. But it was definitely her. Complete with what looked suspiciously like track marks on her right arm. It was hard not to laugh. But she got off at the very next stop, 36th St. And it was back to business as usual.

WASHINGTON - Al Qaeda decided not to launch a deadly cyanide gas plot in New York's subways because it wouldn't have killed enough people, according to the author whose bombshell book revealed the frightening scheme.
"Al Qaeda's thinking is that a second-wave attack should be more destructive and more disruptive than 9/11," writer Ron Suskind said in an interview with Time magazine. "Why? Because that would create an upward arc of terror. ... That fear and terror is a central goal of the Al Qaeda strategy."
[...] When President Bush learned the cyanide plot had been nixed, according to Suskind, Bush said: "This is bad enough. What does calling this off say about what else they're planning? ... What could be the bigger operation Zawahiri didn't want to mess up?"

I believe that's the first intelligent thing I've ever heard you say, Mr. President.

I called in sick to work today. I've had literally nothing to do for two days in a row. It stretched my time-killing skills to the max. And when I got home yesterday, I found a notice from UPS saying they had tried to deliver something, and it needed a personal signature. Why, I don't know, because it was just the bed extenders I ordered from Amazon. But since they made the first attempt on a Wednesday, that puts the next two on Thursday and Friday, and then, as far as I know, it gets returned to sender. Or, at best, I have to pick it up from UPS. And I have no idea where that would be. So I decided I'd rather stay home and wait for UPS than go to work and sit at my desk for 8 hours.

UPS rang the bell around a quarter to 11, and I went running downstairs. I had my slippers on. Apparently, they don't provide as much traction as I initially thought because when I got to the next to last step, my feet slipped right out from under me and I landed hard on my butt. And hit my back against the edge of the stair for good measure. I hope I don't bruise.

After that, I got myself some lunch and watched A Good Woman. Very interesting; beautifully made and it managed to surprise me, which is generally not easy to do. Maybe it was an off day. But really, you can't go wrong with an Oscar Wilde script.

Also on my agenda for the day was to go to the gym. I joined one this week about a 5-10 minute walk from my apartment. So I went. It served to remind me how completely out of shape I am. Just so you can all have a good laugh at my expense, I managed to put in three whole minutes on the elliptical. Yes, three. Sooo, I'm thinking I need to work up to that particular machine. Consider it my nemesis.

So after walking home and taking a cold/tepid bath to clean up, I got dressed and met Ellie for a free showing of Nacho Libre. It was better than I expected; kind of Napolean Dynamite-esque. I wouldn't have gone if I'd had to pay money for it (before having seen it), but I can recommend it to others now with a clear conscience. It's good light-hearted fun.

And now, after spending about three hours talking to people, I need to start heading for bed. Unfortunately, it's back to work tomorrow. But then it's the weekend again. Yay!

You know what's very paradoxical? Nail technicians never have good nails.

Hairdressers generally have good hair (even if it's rather adventurous), make-up artists always have "good" make-up (depending on your point of view; some don't seem to understand the concepts of under-stated or subtle), but manicurists can never have beautifullly done nails because of their constant proximity to acetone.

Well, I had to think about something while I was getting my mani/pedi.

When I got off the train last night, the first thing I noticed was that there were more people than usual around and traffic was backed up terribly. As I walked home, there were people randomly yelling and screaming, but in a happy way. I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. I finally decided it had to be World Cup related, so I asked Charlie who had played yesterday. Brazil / Croatia. Ahh. That explains it.

Apparently, I have a lot of Brazilians in my neighborhood. And boy, were they happy. Actually, on the way home from the gym later, I also passed by a few people wearing Croatian shirts. So I guess I have a nice mix.

On the train this morning, one of the first things I noticed was an MTA employee in my car. I didn't think much of it. Nothing terribly unusual there. I read the patch on his shirt sleeve: MTA Collections Agent. Okay. But halfway through the ride, he turned around and faced the opposite direction, and I saw on his right side was a holster. With a gun. And when he sat down a few minutes later, it almost seemed like the vest he was wearing was bulletproof, from the stiffness and the way it pushed up. All of which makes me wonder, "What the hell kind of collection agents does the MTA have?"

Also in my car, having joined us at 23rd and Ely, was a young woman who appeared to be in her late twenties, but honestly, it was hard to tell from the amount of make-up she had on. She was wearing white pants, a very tight white, v-neck shirt (that, of course, did not reach all the way down to her pants), and carried a white purse. Her hair was a shade of blonde not found in nature and her make-up was "hard" looking. You know, like obviously unnatural. As if she were wearing lipliner filled in over her lips, no gloss to be seen, one shade of make-up over her face with no blush. It was painful. Seriously, woman, add some color to your life. Branch out. Let your hair go back to normal. Wear some blush and some lip gloss. Wear all white and carry a red purse. Something. I mean, the woman standing next to you, same approximate age, was hardly a fashion icon but at least she looked normal.

My brain is mush. I'm quickly approaching my saturation point for the day. Why is it not 5 yet?!

So now there's a cell phone ring that only young people can hear. Because, you know, the older you get, the less you can hear higher-pitched frequencies. It's one of the first things to go.

In a completely unrelated story: One of the many pieces of machinery in my dad's office emits a constant, very high-pitched whine. I mentioned it to him the first time I heard it, and he had no idea what I was talking about. Same thing with the air conditioner at home; it makes a similar noise, and both things drive me absolutely nuts, but nobody else can hear it. And when I say nobody else, I mean no one else concerned, i.e., the family, not nobody else in the world, i.e., Cathy is crazy. Anyway.
I really don't get why anyone would want to use that ring. If it's so important to go undetected, then why don't they just put it on vibrate, I ask you?

Meh. Kids.

Ok, so no Art Institute. I'm going to do something unusual and trust dad's judgment. Who'd a'thunk?

I think I managed to be semi-productive this weekend... I worked on my Moondance stuff for hours tonight and pretty much wrapped it up. And I did my laundry and unpacked my suitcase (from two weeks ago). Tomorrow, I need to straighten up a few things and actually clean in my room. But I finally ordered some bed risers and a canvas storage box/bag so I can put away my winter clothes under the bed.

I also managed to get out for a bit today; joined Ellie and her brother for brunch at the Edison Cafe and then went over to Chelsea to visit the Chelsea Market, home to such things as the Food Network and Oxygen. I took my new camera and got some good shots, I think.

And I ordered a Father's Day present and mailed a birthday card. I'm so on top of things.

But tomorrow... back to work. And also on the schedule: clean the bathroom, call my landlady, and start looking at job listings again. Somebody stop me...

Listening to: Taking The Long Way by the Dixie Chicks. Quite good.

This weekend will hopefully be spent being productive... cleaning, laundering, etc. And I need to finish my section for the next issue of Moondance. And call my landlady about apartments. I keep forgetting to ask Sarah for the number. But for now... off to kill time!

I've always hated Ann Coulter. This is why.

With Ellie's help, I figured out why this Macbeth poster was designed the way it was.

Apparently, they'll be performing another play called Mother Courage and her Children. I still think it's confusing for an ad, though. Since most people have only heard of Macbeth. And the colors remind me of McDonald's. But whatever.

The Alabama primary was yesterday. I forgot to vote while I was home. But I'll make sure to do so for the November election. Strangely, we voted down Roy Moore (yay) but approved the local amendment banning gay marriage. Which, as Charlie pointed out to me, is completely pointless since we already have a state-wide gay marriage ban. I guess they just wanted to make absolutely sure we understand.

I'm certainly sorry for this family's loss but how exactly is it his college's fault that he got drunk one night and threw himself down a trash chute? Nobody takes personal responsibility anymore.

I have work to do this morning, yay. But before I forget, two things.

I forgot to mention that yesterday morning, right after I entered the office building, I went to the elevators that go up to the cafeteria. There were five people standing there in the elevator bay, waiting, which I guess struck me as being unusual because there are 6 elevators in each bay and that doesn't usually happen. So I walked forward and noticed that the call button was not, in fact, lit up. I pressed it and ding there's the elevator. Magic.

And secondly, on my way to the subway this morning, I noticed there's a new poster up at the bus stop on the corner advertising Macbeth "in the park." Which park, I don't know, I didn't pay attention. But what caught my eye was that the word Macbeth spawned the word "mother," vertical from a common M, and then a horizontal "courage" running through "mother." Am I remembering this wrong? What did Macbeth have to do with mother?

FYI, any emails she sends me from work are always in all caps. I thought it would lose something without it, so I left them. The computer system they use at the office requires everything be entered that way, and apparently she doesn't like to take the time to hit that pesky caps-lock key.

My first thought upon seeing this headline (Cloned mules lose to naturals in pro race) was who would want to race mules?

And the breakfast cook at the office cafeteria still remembers my order after a two-week absence. I'm impressed.

So... On Friday, I got off work at 5, as usual, and went to my train station a block away at Rockefeller Center, where I waited for 15 minutes or more for my train, which never came. Finally, they announced that the V would not be running because of water on the tracks. They told us to backtrack to 42nd St./Times Sq. and take the 7 train instead. Now, normally, the 7 goes nowhere near where I live, so I don't know what the plan was for that. Apparently, there was water on the tracks at the 36th St. stop, and my stop is the one right after that, so obviously I had a problem.

Anyway, first I took the train in the wrong direction for two stops and had to turn around. When I got to 42nd, everybody and their great-aunt Myrtle who was trying to get back to Queens was heading for the 7 train. And it was rush hour on a Friday, too. I did not at all want to deal with these hordes of people, and besides, it's a hefty walk from the E to the 7. So I thought maybe I could just get a cab instead; I was willing to pay for it at this point. The only one I managed to flag down didn't want to go to Queens. Great. I decided to walk down the street and see a movie instead, hoping at least part of the problem would be fixed by the time it was over. So I went and saw X-Men 3 (which was good, by the way).

I headed back to the subway around 8:15. I asked a station attendant if the Queens-bound trains were running yet, and she said only the E was, but it would only go as far as Queens Plaza (one stop before the flooded 36th St.) and then there would be shuttle buses to take people further on. I'm assuming the shuttles were going to follow the train route, but I don't know for sure. So I got on the E. We got to 23rd St./Ely Ave. and were told that our train was not going to continue on to Queens Plaza (the next stop) because of congestion. So we had to get off and wait for the next one. We finally got to Queens Plaza and everyone headed upstairs to get to the shuttle buses. Keep in mind, it's been raining ever since I got off work.

Now we have maybe two hundred or more people standing around on the street corner, waiting for shuttle buses. In 15-20 minutes, I saw maybe two or three pass by and none that stopped. I have a problem waiting around doing nothing for too long, so I just picked a direction with my best judgment and started walking. Incidentally, I was going in one of the two correct directions, as I needed to go northeast; I went east. The entire area was a mess. People walking all over the place, cars backed up, police directing traffic, and rain. I pretty much just followed other people most of the time, kept going east, and tried to find a cab. Which was almost impossible. I called Liz and Alison and got no answers, so I called dad to find out where the hell I was to see if I could actually walk home. While I was on the phone with dad, Liz called back; she and Aaron were leaving a movie, fortunately had driven to the theater, and could pick me up. But between the traffic and me not knowing exactly where I was, it took awhile for them to find me. The whole process of getting on the train to the time they picked me up was about two hours. I think I got home around 10:30 or 10:45 and took a shower because I felt awful. Totally drenched. Even with my raincoat.

And then I realized that I'm late paying my Bloomingdale's bill because I paid the wrong account. I still don't understand what's going on with that, but I can't find out till later today, as the customer service number I called only works M-F. See, when I opened the account, the only card I received in the mail was "Bloomingdale's Visa," so that's the account number I used when setting up my online bill-pay with CheckFree (the service they use; I also pay my GAP bill that way). But I now have two statements from Bloomingdale's showing a completely different account number (a Bloomingdale's account number rather than a Visa #) and a late balance. So basically I paid $86 against an account I've never used, and I now have a balance of $115 on my Bloomingdale's account. Pretty pissed off about that. I assumed that I should use the account number off of whatever card they sent me; I don’t even know why I have a new Visa card when all I wanted to do was open a Bloomingdale's account. I mean, I like the shoes I bought there, but I don't know that they were worth this.

So that was my Friday night. Whoo. Needless to say I was feeling very anti-city. And I spent the rest of my weekend in my apartment. Mostly in bed.

I had fully intended to be in bed by now. Why does that never work?

First day back at work today, whoo. Just like I remember it. There's this new guy there (I've been there slightly longer than him) who acts like a corporate spy. Today he walked around a lot, just looking to see if we were working. Really, do you not have anything to do? 'Cause I can help with that. Liz and Marcella call him Jack-in-the-Box because whenever he hears someone talking he peeks his head over his cubicle wall to spy. Freakin' Nazi.

I went to the grocery store today and bought fruit. Really. Apples and oranges and grapes. And cheese dip, but that's beside the point. I even ate an apple tonight. Go me. I think I'm going to sign up at Liz's gym next week; it's only $100 for one year. I can handle that. And if I have someone to go with, all the better.

I'm trying to figure out what it's permissable to wear to work in the summer. I don't have many options. And it's hot. And humid. And just generally icky. And I don't so much have money to go shopping right now. Hence, problem.

Ellie, sorry I ditched on dinner tonight. Too many negative factors. I know you're probably not happy. But happy anniversary anyway. Have a good weekend in Boston.

I'm going to be very tired in the morning. :(
