4/26/2006 From Overheard in the Office:
1166 Avenue of the Americas New York, NY posted 4:05 PM / post / view (1) 4/25/2006 Key West, FL: Monroe County officials said a boater found a human head in the ocean just a few miles off Islamorada. Sheriff's office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said part of the spine was still attached, and some teeth remained. The head was found off of Alligator Reef, a popular snorkel and dive spot about four miles east of Indian Key. Because nothing says "Snorkel here!" like the name Alligator Reef. posted 1:40 PM / post / view (0) 4/21/2006 I can't decide if I was more or less productive this week with Liz gone. I spent more time at my desk, but more time playing, too. Maybe it evened out. But she'll be back for next week, so who cares. I discovered that there's a huge Barnes & Noble literally one block down from my office, so I went there yesterday after work and bought about $75 worth of books. Good times. Now I need to update my Amazon wishlist for my birthday. I keep forgetting that it's coming up. The Container Store is my new heaven. I went in this week to find some things to help organize my room, especially my desk, and fell in love. It's like a toy store for organization freaks. I love it. On my way home from Ellie's last night, I walked to the subway stop I normally use (but haven't recently) and got completely freaked out when I saw it was a 1 stop and not the R. I hadn't used that route in so long, apparently, the forgot I have to take the 1 to Times Square and switch to the R to get home. I actually thought, "Did they change the station?! WTF?!" I'm not kidding. I felt retarded when I realized what was going on. Which I didn't until I called Ellie to ask if I'd somehow entered the Twilight Zone. I reeeaaaallllly want to leave early today. I need to go to Payless (I've been told there's a two-story one at 34th and 6th; multi-story places like Barnes and Payless still intrigue me, not gonna lie) and stop at the post office, and then sleeeeeep! Beautiful, beautiful sleep. I also get to watch some TV I missed this week, finish Walk The Line, go to Ellie's roommate's birthday party, and have a student photographer take pictures of Ellie and me for a project. Relatively busy weekend for me. By the way, Melanie, I dreamed that I came home to my apartment in Montgomery and you'd moved in. Very weird. I also dreamed my kitty was there waiting for me. :( Sadness. Okay... it's about time for lunch. Maybe by the time I'm finished, the afternoon will look a little more doable. We'll see. posted 12:34 PM / post / view (1) 4/17/2006 Liz: The priest who did my Confirmation shot himself. One of the many interesting tidbits from brunch yesterday. The rest of my weekend consisted of shopping, getting a haircut, and random bouts of cleaning, napping, and reading. I'm all by myself at work this week while Liz is in Vermont. I hope I can make it without my break-buddy. posted 2:33 PM / post / view (0) 4/14/2006 I get off of work today at 1, and then Liz and I are going to lunch, and I'm going shopping. After I stop at the bank. ;) Today rocks. They even had my chocolate chip muffin in the cafeteria this morning. My internet stopped working for about 2 days and I was very irritated. I finally realized it was because the night it stopped working, I had accidentally left the laptop running on battery so it died while I was sleeping. And before it turned itself off, it probably turned off the wireless to conserve power. So when I plugged it in the next morning, it was still off, and I didn't notice. But now I know there's a little indicator light, so I can start paying attention to it... While I was messing around with the router settings, I noticed that someone else was using my internet connection, which pissed me off. Under the list of users was Sarah, my roommate, and "Oscar." I was like, "Who the fuck is Oscar and why is he on my internet?!" So I got rid of him and put in a password. So it should be secure now. The only two users on that router should be Sarah and Marvin. Yes, Marvin. Because I'm cool like that. Nothing else particularly interesting going on. I didn't know what I was going to do for Easter, but fortunately Liz and Aaron are having a brunch, so I'll get to do that. Yay for brunch. Brunch is a real thing here. Very serious. It's a little odd. Oh, and Robin... just so you have a visual here, the skirt of my dress needs to have about a foot and a half of material cut off. Just sayin. posted 12:26 PM / post / view (0) 4/8/2006 Wednesday night, I went with Liz to see Barefoot in the Park, starring Amanda Peet. We got free tickets because we're cool like that, and they ended up being pretty good, down in the orchestra on the aisle. Unfortunately, it went downhill from there. Amanda Peet wasn't there that night, her role was being played by the understudy. And she wasn't bad, but... well, that kinda took away the only truly interesting thing about the play. Because the story is boring. Really, incredibly boring. There's no conflict, nothing to make you want to find out what's coming next. It just... is. We ended up leaving right before the second act started because we were just tired and completely un-impressed. But the evening wasn't a total loss because we had good Thai food and discovered that there's an Au Bon Pain near our office that sells Krispy Kreme. Score. I had an interview yesterday at FreshDirect, sort of an online grocery store that delivers in the NYC area. I applied for a job in the Creative Dept., which basically means I'd be working on the website and print advertising and random other stuff. It's interesting because they have this huge building in Long Island City (that's in Queens for you non-New Yorkers ;)), which houses the entire operation. Food preparation, shipping, warehouse, corporate offices, etc. All the offices are on the same floor, so it reminds me a lot of my dad's company. :) Pretty laid-back. I'm hoping to hear back from them by the end of next week. It would be an interesting job experience. And because I think it's interesting and everyone else is doing it: Go to Wikipedia and search for your birthday (May 19) and list your choice of 3 facts, 2 births, and 1 death, including the year.
Facts posted 9:47 PM / post / view (0) 4/5/2006 I just have to share this. From this week's Harper's Weekly Review, a quote from our esteemed president:
posted 1:53 PM / post / view (1) 4/2/2006 I'm trying to kill time before Gray's Anatomy starts. It's slow going. But I have managed to clean up a sizable chunk of my room. I'm feeling accomplished. I spoke to Brannon this week and confirmed that my future roomie is, indeed, still coming to New York this summer. June or July or whenever she feels she has enough money saved. I can't wait; living with Brannon is just fun waiting to be had. Weekends go by too fast. Friday I snuck out of a work about half an hour early because I just couldn't take it anymore, ran home and took a shower before going out for the night. I finally watched Old School which was pretty entertaining, then went out to Coyote Ugly for about 30 minutes before stopping a much more sedate bar where I attempted my first shot (I got about a third of it down, I think; I probably would have finished it if I'd had a bit more food in my stomach), and then had McDonald's around 3 am before going to sleep around 4. I'm guessing. Maybe 4:30. Saturday was spent sleeping till about 11:30, then meeting Ellie for The Inside Man at 1:15. Fabulous. Go see it. You just can't go wrong with Clive Owen. After that, I went home and ate my customary peanut butter sandwich and went back to bed. And alternated between that, reading, and doing random stuff at my computer... And today was spent mostly sleeping, then getting some groceries (I use the term lightly), reading, watching a little bit of tv, and then cleaning up my disaster of a room. I think I'm making good progress. Once it's presentable, I'll take a few pictures. Liz brought back my bridesmaid dress with her from Alabama, but I haven't tried it on yet. She's been sick this week. :( I'll probably go over to her place sometime this week if she's feeling better. |
