It was a very long weekend. Beginning with my being locked out of my apartment until Saturday afternoon. Bad experience all around, but I don't want to get into it. Fortunately, I was able to stay at Alison's apartment that night, even though she was in Boston, because Deena was home to let me in. When I finally got home Saturday, I spent most of the rest of the weekend sleeping, and then stayed out waaaaay too late Sunday night/morning, resulting in my calling in sick to work.

I bought my plane ticket home for May. I'll be flying into Atlanta on May 17 and leaving from there on the 31st. So I'll have two weeks to relax at home, and I'm really looking forward to it. Brannon called me this afternoon, and I need to call her back. I hope she's still coming up here in June, or I'll be sad.

Lastly, I finally have my archives up. I'm almost embarassed of them. But I'll live. Just don't make too much fun of me. And coincidentally, this is my 500th post. Yay me.

I pretty much like my new job. It's not very interesting, but it's easy and it pays well. And it will probably be a lot more fun once Liz is back next week. :) Basically, all I do is go through a database of businesses and verify their names, addresses, phone numbers, etc., and try and match them to a D&B number. I'm pretty thorough about it, so I might finish 20 records or so a day.

I just want to take a minute and complain about the computer system, though. First, the email program. They don't use Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, or anything else even moderately respectable. They use LotusNotes. I'm not kidding. I looked around, and that's all I can find. I thought, "Seriously, guys? Really?" That program is retarded and I hate it.

Second, I think they think all their users are morons. I hate using Internet Explorer, so just now when I got in, I went and downloaded Opera to see if the system would let me install it. Apparently, they think that not allowing the user to create folders in Program Files will stop anyone from installing a new program. So I installed it in My Documents instead. I mean, really, they can't disallow making new folders in My Documents. So it works, and it's great. I just think it's kind of funny. Maybe I'll try AIM next.

I saw Thank You For Smoking at a free screening with Ellie last night. Totally brilliant. If it actually appears at a theater in Alabama, you should go.

I have full-time work for a while, so yay for money. I'll get my first check (for Thursday and Friday) next Wednesday. I'm working here, same place as Liz, and basically doing Google searches for pay. But I am still looking for a regular job.

I also made my first purchase at Bloomingdale's this week. Shoes. Of course. They're lovely. And I finally get to start reading Pride & Prejudice this weekend since I actually got to a bookstore this week.

Okay... back to work. Or something.

I thought the MTA was going to be nice to me this weekend. I fully expected to have to take the usual detour to get into the city on a weekend, but they surprised me. I got to my station Monday morning, and the trains were running normally. Same thing this morning. But on the way home, we got to Queens Plaza and they announced the train would be running express to Roosevelt. Bastards. So I had to take my usual detour in reverse. Maybe they finally finished working on the Manhattan-bound track and switched to the other side. But whatever they're doing I wish they'd hurry the fuck up.

Strangely, when I got to my stop, there were a lot of people on the other side waiting for trains. So either someone forgot to tell people that no Queens-bound trains would be stopping there or it was just MY train that went express.

Well, where to begin. I haven't been doing much of interest lately besides the occasional visit to work and to see Liz. But my mom visited this weekend so much fun was had.

I picked her up at the airport Friday afternoon and took a cab to 42nd & Broadway. Sadly, because I failed to specify that I wanted to stay in Queens, he took us to Times Square. But I mean, really, if I wanted Times Square I would've said Times Square, right? I don't know. So we ended up taking the subway home from there. I guess it let mom see a little more of the city.

When we got home, we just hung out and talked and unpacked the boxes I had left lying around my room. It's much better now. I just need to clean up my desk area. But I have a lot more space now, so yay. Then Ellie came over to visit and we went to a really good French restaurant down the street. I love their steak. It's fantastic.

Saturday, we got up and went down the street (in the other direction, incidentally) to a diner on the corner for breakfast. I tried the chocolate chip pancakes. Not bad. And then we started our shopping spree at Herald's Square. We wandered for a little while through Macy's and eventually had lunch in the Cellar restaurant (which took forever to find because there's a completely separate set of escalators to get to and from it) and proceeded to 5th Avenue so we could visit Tiffany's. She bought me my very own piece of Tiffany's jewelry. Oh, happy days. We finished there just in time; they were closing as we left. When we finally made it home (which sucked because of train detours), we ordered pizza from yet another restaurant down the street and went on to bed.

Sunday, we had brunch at the diner and then took the train to Target where mom was endlessly fascinated by the shopping cart escalator. We got some things I needed for my apartment like an extra set of towels and a lamp and lightbulbs and a towel rack she insisted I needed. When we got home, I talked her into a nap. And then we got changed, went into the city, had dinner at a really good Italian place and then saw Chicago. After which we came home and went to bed. And this morning I saw her off to the airport and went into work. She called me this evening to say that she got back to Birmingham and couldn't find her car keys. She said dad was driving up to bring her spares, but nothing since then. I assume she either got a hotel for the night or they made it back home.

Work today was better than it has been. I finally finished what I've been working on since I started and got to move on to something else. And we got lunch today, so... score. On the way home, I stopped at the post office for stamps. I had to use a $20 bill and ended up getting 11 or 12 $1 coins back from the machine. Great. I hate using those. Mainly because they haven't been mainstreamed here like they have in Europe. I really didn't think anything of it there. But here it's just weird.

And I would like to offer this final thought. Melanie called a little while ago to tell me about her trip to Dallas. She said security at the Montgomery airport confiscated her lighter. My first thought was, "Duh." My second thought was, "Why did you have a lighter?" It was in my make-up bag, she tells me. Okay. "Why do you have a lighter in your make-up bag?" To heat up my eye-liner pencil, of course. Haven't you ever done that? "Um, no."
